Module 2: Leverage Your Impact Skills

Introduction

Throughout your career, you’ve gained knowledge, learned from new skills and experiences. These are successes you can own and qualify you (self-qualify) to influence action for others.

This is the stage where you can now leverage in order to advance in your career.

Learn to leverage your value and package your expertise for your next career opportunity or grow in your current role. Recognize where you have moved on and transitioned from domain leader or subject matter expert to an advisor.  Learn to communicate your strategy and vision to get buy-in, step back, be flexible and trust when others disagree.

Package what you know, leveraging all the value which you bring to your clients either as the intrapreneur inside an organization or entrepreneur inside your practice. Master how to "plan the work" and "work the plan" every time, pitching your ideas with confidence and relying on your experience.

Learn to let go and communicate your strategy and vision to get buy-in as well as step back, be flexible and trust when others disagree. You will look beyond the trees and trust that all of your years of experience has led up to where you are right now. You will self-qualify yourself to show off your systems and best practices in a new senior advisory role where you are looked upon for your skills no longer as a "do-er" but for your ideas, how you think and consistently deliver RESULTS.

This video is a portion of a live seminar led for Executive Directors who were preparing to lead a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiative at their organizations. The same approach can be used for your initiative.  See accompanying excel template to the right of this video which you can download as a template to begin your plan.

This walks you through the steps on how to plan your strategic initiative and have you begin a draft that will eventually serve as a progress report for your management and/or board.

Listen to Q&A below

Question: Marisa, how do you lead authentically in a culture that has institutional barriers which go against the grain of your core values?

Behind the scenes with Marisa

Let me share a story with you based on the above photo. This was taken in NYC at the Harvard Club. At the time, I was running my business alongside my executive career. I had mentally moved away from technology and Wall Street yet was still sought after to speak on behalf of vendors and clients. So I did.

As a safe bet measure, I thought "Well, if I'm still the trusted technologist who is being invited to self-promote her value, I'd better still accept these speaking invitations."  So I kept speaking, even though I only wanted to speak on the subjects of leadership, facing fear, career confidence etc..

I share this with you for one reason. If there are companies you interact with or organizations you have partnered with or a board you have sat on, then leverage that opportunity along with your subject area of knowledge and speak on their stage virtual or live. Be opportunistic about it. Look for opportunities to do that at least twice a year. After completing this module you have recognized how you can package all your VALUE all your EXPERTISE.

Other than direct peers, clients, management, business partners and patients who else is reaping the benefits of your VALUE. How about all those professionals out there who can learn from you as well? These opportunities will position you as a thought leader and continuously move your career ahead giving you credibility.

I took this video of my speaking from the below talk (I had a trip-pod set up in the back of the room) and posted it on Linked in.  Then I Linkedin to everyone I met in the room so they could replay it. That's what I mean by keeping yourself memorable for new opportunities.

Own your value as the the thought leader that you are.  You have no idea what doors can fly open years later for you. I had a few job offers after this event. I didn't take them as I wasn't interested in advancing any longer in IT, but I acknowledged that I created them. If you lead them, they will come.
